Considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the recent Fukushima nuclear accident), the Chernobyl disaster is one of the greatest catastrophes we've experienced in modern times. While most of us could never fully understand its impact, one photographer made it his mission to show us how it changed and even destroyed lives. Jan Smith sent us this powerful set, asking us to share it with our viewers.

"For the last few months I’ve been working in Ukraine on my latest project: Igrushka," Smith says. "This is an intimate exploration of the Chernobyl accident, twenty-five years later.

"Igrushka means 'toy' in Russian. It retells the Chernobyl accident through the portraits of forsaken toys from a very particular nursery in the abandoned city of Pripyat. These toys illustrate a way of playing that changed after the accident and fall of the USSR. They are also a conduit to memories about Chernobyl. The images are paired with stories and fables found on open pages in the nursery, as well as with excerpts from interviews with persons who were children at the time. The project is ongoing, and will culminate in a book later this year.

In case you’re not yet familiar with his work, Tes became a serious street artist in 1992, painting murals and graffiti art throughout the Tampa Bay area. In 1999, he expanded on his natural artistic abilities, with that of the computer age, to develop compelling graphic designs for a number of clients.
Now, Tes One is combining all that he knows from his street-art roots and his digital design experience, to create works of art that accurately depicts his perspective and the world around him. The end result of his work demonstrates the craft of his design as well as the rawness of his stenciled street art. To help get that attention, we used a fitting medium that has never been used before for advertising: women’s breasts. Included in this group of models with headlines on them about the cause are actual breast cancer survivors. People need to talk about breast cancer and this was a way to fuel that conversation. Say hello to Rudy Fig, a 19-year-old Minneapolis based emerging painter. Fig sent us her “doll faced babes in macabre, whimsical worlds with a lot of ice cream” and we left her Flickr stream craving sweets, and more of her delicious work.
Where does the inspiration for all this sugary Pop Surrealism meets psychological purging come from? “My parents were toy designers which has had an impact on my work,” Fig told Juxtapoz. Yeah, growing up surrounded by toy parts and designs may have a slight impact on one’s artistic outlook.
Her new website won’t be launched until the end of the month but until then, you can peep some of her "in progress" paintings that she’s been working on for a show in August on Flickr and her MySpace. Grab a spoon and dig in. It’s tasty, we promise.
